With «Music for Brain and Butt», the Intercity Jazz Orchestra opens the new season with music by guitarist, composer, and bandleader Nico Stettler. His formation Weepack combines jazz, funk, and world music with distinctive grooves and colorful harmonies. Selected pieces from the Weepack repertoire have been specially arranged for the large big band lineup – familiar music in a whole new sound.
An evening dedicated to one of the most influential figures of European big band jazz: Peter Herbolzheimer combined jazz rock, funk, Latin, and classical big band elements to create a distinctive sound. The Intercity Jazz Orchestra focuses on selected compositions and arrangements from his extensive body of work – with striking brass sections, plenty of rhythm, and loads of energy.
Music meets Swiss history: The Lucerne pianist and composer Peter Zihlmann originally wrote his «Beromünster Suite» for the cultural project SIGNAL! and the former national transmitter Beromünster. The composition combines the history of this special place with contemporary jazz, improvisation, and multi-layered orchestral soundscapes. Together with Peter Zihlmann, the Intercity Jazz Orchestra brings the suite to the stage.
Tchaikovsky's «Nutcracker» – but completely different. Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn transformed the famous classic into a swinging, bluesy, and surprisingly modern jazz suite. Familiar melodies meet Ellington's unmistakable sound world – an extraordinary concert evening between classical and big band jazz, perfect for the Advent season.
For the season finale, the Intercity Jazz Orchestra meets the Trigger Concert Big Band from Rapperswil-Jona. The focus is on two big names in German-speaking jazz: Klaus Doldinger and Peter Herbolzheimer. Both big bands present selected works by the two musicians – from Doldinger's unmistakable sound to Herbolzheimer's powerful big band arrangements.
